Student Government Association at Stephen F. Austin State University

SGA Logo

Within SGA, every member works hard to ensure that students are represented in every phase of their experience at SFA. The projects and bills that are passed in our meetings are an important stepping stone to real change in the life of the SFA student. For over 70 years the SGA has contributed to the rich, independent tradition of the Lumberjack student. A few of our recent accomplishments include:

• The passage of resolutions that led directly to the construction of the SFA Student Recreation Center and the SFA Student Center.

• The painting of the Purple Haze section of Homer-Bryce Stadium (fall 2007).

• Partnering with the University Police to improve lighting and safety protocols on   campus.

• Registering over 500 students to vote in the state and national general elections in the past three years.

Purpose of Student Government Association The Student Government Association of Stephen F. Austin State University was established to be the voice of the students. The SGA is made up and administered entirely by students and is the representative body of the students at SFA. The purpose of Student Government is three fold.

To be the voice of the student body at SFA
The Student Government Association strives to be the student voice at SFA by serving as a sounding board and introducing legislation on their behalf. While the SGA does not pass legislation that is binding to university policy, it does posess significant influence amongst the university's administration. Bills passed in the last five years have addressed issues dealing with campus lighting, campus safety, and the building of our SFA Student Recreation Center and University Center.

To serve as a model government
The Student Government is a model government and to that extent is fashioned in a traditional government model. The SGA has three primary branches; the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial. Each branch serves a vital function to the overall health of the organization. SGA students get to travel to Austin and meet with their state representatives and senators to learn more about the political process in Texas.

  • The Legislative Branch is made up of the Student Senate and facilitates the writing and passing of campus wide initiatives in the form of referendums and bills. The senate is made up of students that have been elected by their peers and represent their respective colleges and classes.

  • The Executive Branch is made up of the Office of President and Vice-President and serve as the official voice of the student body. The executives make reports on behalf of the student body to the Board of Regents, design leadership opportunities for fellow SGA students and administer the SGA budget.

  • The Judicial Branch is the Supreme Court and presides over the student traffic court that hears traffic violation cases. They also serve as a presiding body to interpret the SGA Constitution in cases of organization conflict. In some cases the Supreme Court is used to rule in student issues that are not associated with the SGA.

To Foster Leadership Development
The SGA is also an excellent place for students to develop their leadership abilities. By participating in the election process, developing legislation and being the voice of the students the members establish themselves as campus leaders.
